In August 2020, Biscayne Bay made headlines, first, due to a fish kill resulting from low levels of dissolved oxygen in the water, followed by an algal bloom likely caused by decaying marine life. These events, coupled with continued seagrass die-off, are the unfortunate future of our bay unless action is taken to remedy the human induced environmental pressures. It is imperative that ALL residents of Miami-Dade County understand the issues and take the necessary steps to ensure the health of the bay.
Campaigns to #SaveBiscayneBay:
The goal of every Blue Scholars education program and community event is to connect to protect. We strive to create a meaningful experience to connect South Florida youth and community members to Biscayne Bay and the ocean, in an effort to facilitate a long-term relationship dedicated to preservation.
- In partnership with the global GivingTuesday movement, Blue Scholars Initiative launched GIVING BAY DAY on December 1, 2020 to express gratitude for Miami’s crown jewel. GivingTuesday is a global day to focus on generosity and community. We recognize that every act counts and that everyone has something to give so each year we invite the South Florida community to join us for The 12 Days of Biscayne Bay.
- Presented by Blue Scholars and The Barnacle Society, and in partnership with several amazing organizations, the annual Biscayne Bay Experience & Celebration takes place in December. Open to the public and fun for the whole family, activities include on the water recreation, education, art, volunteer impact and entertainment.
