When people think about sanctuary animals, they usually imagine pigs, goats, chickens, maybe a few dogs or cats. They don?t usually imagine a giant snapping turtle.
But here at the sanctuary, compassion doesn?t come with a species requirement. And that?s how G.W. became part of our family.
G.W. came to us through MATTS (Mid-Atlantic Turtle and Tortoise Society, Inc. ), a place that specializes in caring for turtles who need a little extra help. Like many animals who end up in sanctuaries, G.W. isn?t able to thrive fully in the wild. Life had dealt him a few challenges that meant he needed a safe, permanent place to live.
And that?s where we came in.
Now G.W. lives a much quieter life here, one filled with warm water, safe surroundings, and the simple rhythm of a turtle doing what turtles do. Some days he?s basking. Some days he?s slowly exploring his space. Most of the time he reminds me that life doesn?t have to be loud to be meaningful.
There?s something grounding about caring for a creature that has existed, in some form, for millions of years. Snapping turtles carry the wisdom of deep time in their slow movements and steady eyes.
They ask for very little.
Just safety.
Stability.
And respect for who they are.
G.W. may not be the kind of animal people expect to see at a sanctuary, but he?s a reminder that compassion isn?t selective. Every life matters, even the quiet ones beneath the water?s surface. And around here, once you?re family, you?re family for life.
